Striped sunflower seeds have a thicker shell, much harder for House Sparrows and blackbirds to crack open. Larger birds such as Cardinals, Jays, Woodpeckers and Grosbeaks have no problem breaking through the bigger shells and getting to the nutritious meat inside.
